What is Amethyst?

Amethyst is a well-known gem, easily identified by its deep and varied purple hues. As well as being the birthstone for February babies, this stone has long associations with royalty across the world. This stone is also known for its calming properties, and ability to offer calming energy to the owner.

What colour is February Birthstone Amethyst?

Real amethyst comes in a range of different shades of purple, some more vibrant, and others more muted and transparent. It truly is a unique crystal, there are no others that tend to offer a similar hue. Despite the fact that it can be laboratory manufactured, the price of real amethyst remains high. This is partially due to the fact that synthetic materials do not possess the energy and the power that real crystals do - their cheap imitation cannot recreate the spiritual nature of amethyst. The natural conditions that were needed to form amethyst no longer exist and its supply is limited, increasing demand.

Healing Properties

Amethyst is believed to have strong healing properties, especially when it comes to mental health. This is a powerful stone for those who may have experienced substance abuse. They have a calming aura and allow the wearer to think clearly and rationally, helping them to stay away from unwanted intoxication. It cleanses the mind of unwanted desires and helps the body to physically let go of the symptoms of addiction.

Amethyst is also worn a lot by pregnant mothers. It provides protection for the baby and the mother, and it helps the mother remain calm and centred throughout her entire pregnancy, but most notably during the process of childbirth. Although it is a birthstone of November, it can be worn all year around especially during pregnancies.

Because it is associated with the head and the mind, Amethyst can also help with night terrors. Its reach extends into the unconsciousness, providing the wearer with peace and calm even in their dreams. People who suffer from insomnia may also find that it helps to calm their inner mind enough to be able to drift off a little easier.

In a more general sense, amethyst is a stone that cleanses negative thoughts and energy. It gets rid of unhealthy thoughts, depression, stress, and anxiety, by absorbing them. In place of these feelings, and emotions, it ushers in calmness and tranquillity. Users feel at peace and feel better equipped to focus on what matters in life.

Balance your Chakras

Amethyst is known as the stone that represents the seventh chakra - the crown. The crown is also purple in color, aligning with amethyst perfectly. It operates on the spiritual plane, and helps people tune into their spiritual energy. This looks different for everyone. Some people believe it aids with meditation and attempting to reach transcendence, others believe it strengthens psychic abilities.

Although amethyst is heavily associated with the crown chakra, they are also used to bring balance to all seven of your chakras. Because of their cleansing abilities, amethysts can help to heal the chakras, realigning them in the process, to reinvigorate the life force.

Origin Story

The word amethyst comes from the Greek term “ametusthos”, which translates to “not intoxicated”. Legend has it that the Greek god of wine, Dionysus, was angry that mortals were not drinking enough of his wine and enjoying his festivities. He ordered tigers to eat the next mortal they came across. Their victim happened to be Amethyst, a young maiden on her way to worship Artemis, the goddess of hunting. She cried for help, and Artemis turned her into a pure white stone to protect her.

Dionysus was so remorseful for what he had done, that he poured wine over the quartz statue. This gave the quartz its beautiful purple color. Many raw amethyst stones still offer glimpses of their original white color, representing the purity of the maiden Amethyst.

In these times, amethysts were often used to stud goblets. It was believed, thanks to their name, that anyone who drank from an amethyst cup was impervious to getting drunk. When the stone was worn as a piece of jewelry, it would sober the wearer up, providing them with a level head that they needed to make smart choices.

Historical uses

Amethyst is a stone that naturally occurs all over the globe, so as a result there are historical instances of it being used everywhere - from Greece, North African countries, and Brazil. Aside from its use to prevent unwanted drunkeness, amethyst was seen elsewhere as a stone of power. The color purple has always been associated with royalty, so it was often given to those who carried high status within society. Worn in prominent places such as the center of crowns, rings, or breastplates, amethyst was intended to be seen. It was believed to bring clarity to rulers, enabling them to make the wisest choices for their kingdoms.

Although amethyst can be manufactured pretty cheaply in a lab today, real amethyst has managed to retain a lot of these regal ties. It is still a powerful gem, and the color purple is still associated with the highest levels of nobility. Jewelry made with amethyst conveys a sense of quiet power and elevated status, without appearing pretentious.

It is also the birthstone for Aquarius

As well as being the birthstone for the month of February, amethyst represents the Aquarius zodiac sign (which is mostly in February). Aquarians are said to be calm and level-headed, using intelligence and logic to seek truth and reason. Amethyst is perfect for these people, as it helps them to see things clearly and to let their unclouded intuition lead the way.
