Emerald, the Color of Life
There is no birthstone that represents life and vitality more than emeralds. The birthstone of May is known for its stunning deep green hues and brings so much vitality to the wearer. It brings out the colour of life!
Physical healing properties of Emeralds
Emeralds are closely associated with the heart, not just spiritually, but also physically. They can improve the health of the heart, one of the most important organs in the body, and arguably one of the greatest life forces. It can help to increase the power and strength of the beating heart as it improves blood flow to the rest of the body. It is also great at treating other internal organs in the lower midsection, such as the kidneys, liver, and pancreas
Emeralds are also great at helping to alleviate symptoms of ageing. Whether this is sore joints or failing hearing, the presence of emeralds can reduce these issues. Emeralds are also especially powerful at healing poor vision, as it is believed that their pure, deep green color can help to remove strain from the eyes. Although they cannot turn back time, they can at least help the wearer to feel young again. Emerald’s abundance of vitality can help to stave off the inevitable breakdown of the body for as long as possible.
Association with Chakras
The heart chakra, also known as Anahata, is the fourth primary chakra. Located in the center of the chest, this chakra is believed to bring love and life to the soul. The heart chakra is the centre-most chakra, not only in terms of where it is on the body but in the general alignment of the 7 chakras. Because of this, it is believed to connect the earthly body to the spirit and the universe.
Emeralds are a great stone to help open up the heart chakra. Their earthly nature help to reawaken the wearer’s soul, breathing life back into their bodies. It reawakens their spirit and passions, helping to remember a lust for life. Emeralds also help to bring love into the wearer and also return it back into the universe. When one is attuned to their soul, they are far more capable of developing and maintaining friendships and relationships with the people around them.
For the strongest connection to the heart chakra, emeralds should be worn as a necklace, on a chain that hangs down towards the center of the chest.
Emerald makes a great gift!
Emerald comes to mind as a gift for people who were born in May. But it can always be considered as a wonderful gift to any friend. With its beautiful colour and its resemblance to love, friendship and life, it will make anyone very happy!
Origins of Emerald
The first known uses of emeralds were in Egypt, around 500 B.C. They were believed to be a favourite of Cleopatra, who wore them every chance that she got. They were seen as a sign of wealth and were worn by the rich to proclaim their elite status. People who were fortunate enough to possess emeralds would be blessed with fertile land, as well as healthy livestock that could nourish the whole village. The Roman emperor Nero was believed to watch gladiator matches through an emerald looking glass, indicating how pure and clear these gems were. The original emerald mines in Egypt were actually abandoned for a period of time, due to the fact that they were so poorly made, it was almost impossible to properly excavate, and only a few emeralds could actually be mined. Emeralds fell out of favor with the Egyptian elite, until the mines were rediscovered again in 1818.
Emeralds were also discovered in Colombia, where they were seen as highly valuable and spiritual by ancient civilisations such as the Incas and Mayans. When the Spanish invaded South America near the end of the 15th century, they too could see their value. This can be seen in all of the ornate colonial jewellery that was created to showcase the deep, bold hues. They stole thousands of emeralds from the continent, and shipped them all over the world, generating global interest in the stunning green stone.
In the past, it was believed that the clarity and purity of emeralds could give people magical powers. By placing an emerald in one’s mouth, they would be able to see into the future. It was also believed that emeralds could also provide people with the ability to see through lies, and understand the true intentions behind someone’s love (or lack thereof).
Today, the purest emeralds are mined in Colombia. They come in a range of different shades of green, from almost yellow, to cloudy or clear green, and even some with a bluish tint.
